The memorial...
Established by the family of Harold "Pop"
Keeney, a graduate of Bothell High School, Western Washington University
and the University of Washington who had an outstanding coaching career
in Western Washington, including Bothell High School. The school
district's athletic complex is named in his memory.
Upon graduation from Bothell
High School in 1920, Harold 'Pop' Keeney was asked by the townsfolk to
become Bothell's first football coach. He was a member of one of
Bothell's pioneer families. Pop coached the Cougars to the state finals
in 1923 and after graduation from Western Washington University he
returned to Bothell for coaching stints from 1931-34 and from 1945-46.
Pop Keeney Field in Bothell carries his
name. All three local high schools use the covered stadium for sporting
events. Years before the field was covered with Astroturf, a hardy
band of daredevils would light the skies over Bothell on the Fourth of
July, launching spectacular howitzer-strength fireworks over the stadium
and overhead of delighted families spread out on their picnic blankets
across the vast football-soccer field.
